Book a Week Challenge – The Journey Begins

Over the years, I have seen several bloggers take on the “Book-a-Week challenge” (sometimes called the 52 books in 52 weeks challenge) and this year, I’ve decided to take the challenge myself. Julien Smith’s post “How to Read a Book a Week in 2011” especially inspired me so I thought “hell, why not give it a go?”

Being an avid reader, I most likely already average a book a week – perhaps more – but have never kept track of the books I’ve read. So in the coming year, my goal is to read a total of 52 books by the end of 2011. These will include books on my “to be read list”, unread books that I already have on my bookshelf or on my Kindle, as well as any new releases in the coming year that catch my interest.

As I tend to read more fiction than non-fiction books, I thought I’d mix it up a bit and focus mainly on non-fiction books in the coming year. I’m sure the occasional fiction book will sneak in but hopefully, the majority of my reads will be non-fiction. As additional motivation, I plan on writing up a short review of my reads on this blog at regular intervals. This will be only on the books I personally liked and can recommend. This way, you might discover a book that you were unaware of previously.

These are the rules that I set for myself:

  1. The book can be in paper, e-book or audiobook format.
  2. can read more than or less than a book a week but at the end of the year I have to have read a minimum of 52 books.
  3. I will publicize my progress by posting a short review of the books that I enjoyed on the Mist in the Garden blog as well as provide a list of every book I’ve read as the year progresses.
  4. The majority of the books read must be non-fiction as to encourage learning.

So the journey begins. Want to join me? If so, I’d love to hear about your progress!
